Caffeine Addiction - Are You Powerless?

Caffeine addiction is extremely common. And in many cases, the seriousness of this issue is downplayed.

The truth is, there are some benefits to caffeine use, and even excessive amounts may not cause health problems for the first year or two. However, long-term addictive use can result in substantial problems, ranging from heart disease and high blood pressure to stomach ulcers and nervous disorders.

If you feel you have a problem with caffeine it is definitely in your best interest to quit. And if you have tried to quit in the past but found yourself simply unable to control your usage, you may be addicted to caffeine.

And the best modern institutions for helping people cope with addiction are in agreement, the first critical step you must take to solve your problem and regain control of your life is to admit your current state of powerlessness.

This may not be easy for you to do. But it’s important to hold the right perspective here:

Caffeine addiction is harming your body. And you have proven previously that willpower alone is not enough, i.e. you say you’ll cut back or quit but cannot follow through on your objective.

As long as you maintain the illusion that you could "quit anytime" or that "it’s just a little coffee", you’ll never be able to quit.

You must accept without reservation that you cannot control your urges to consume caffeine. You are unable to reduce your intake and you become a completely different person when you try to quit for a few hours.

This self-confession is liberating. You’ll likely feel a weight lifted when you come to terms with the idea that you are powerless over your addiction.

The next step is to find a system for quitting, build a plan for success, and find as much support as possible from other people! There is no doubt you can quit caffeine once you accept your problem and launch an honest campaign to get help.
